Patna: The Bihar chief minister, Samrat Choudhary, has pledged stringent action against those accused of threatening women’s safety, declaring they would be pursued “even from the depths of the earth”, as he addressed a gathering in Patna.
Speaking at a women’s rally organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha at Gandhi Maidan, Choudhary framed the issue of women’s security alongside the debate over the women’s reservation bill, using the platform to criticise opposition parties.
He accused leaders of the opposition alliance of prioritising political dynasties over broader representation, contrasting their approach with that of the prime minister, Narendra Modi, whom he said was committed to increasing women’s participation in legislative bodies.
Addressing attendees, Choudhary said his government would act decisively against anyone attempting to create an “atmosphere of insecurity” for women, promising strict enforcement measures.
The chief minister reiterated support for 33% reservation for women in parliament and state assemblies, describing it as a key step towards strengthening women’s political representation. He argued that, had such provisions already been implemented, Bihar would have seen significantly higher numbers of women legislators.
Choudhary also criticised prominent opposition figures including Rahul Gandhi, Lalu Prasad Yadav and M. K. Stalin, accusing them of focusing on advancing their families’ political interests.
During the event, he referred to Bihar’s chief minister, Nitish Kumar, as the “guardian” of the state. Other speakers, including BJP leaders, echoed criticism of the opposition, alleging that resistance to the reservation bill undermines women’s empowerment.
The rally was attended by several senior party figures and legislators, who reiterated support for the proposed reforms and called for greater political participation by women.
