Patna: In a significant move aimed at empowering women, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today transferred Rs 10,000 each to the bank accounts of 10 lakh women under the state’s Mahila Rojgar Yojana, also known as the Chief Minister’s Women Employment Scheme.
Approximately Rs 1,000 crore was disbursed through direct benefit transfer (DBT) in a bid to support women in starting small businesses and strengthening existing enterprises. The scheme, initially announced ahead of the state assembly elections, is seen as a crucial step in boosting women’s economic independence.

The initiative, linked to the Jeevika programme, has already transformed the lives of women in both rural and urban areas. Previously, many women spent their leisure hours solely on household chores. Now, through participation in Jeevika groups, they are engaging in savings, collective development, and disciplined financial management.
Nitish Kumar personally oversaw the transfer, which benefited 950,000 rural and 50,000 urban women associated with Jeevika groups. The scheme aims to reach over 1 crore women in the state, though some eligible beneficiaries have yet to receive the funds.
Officials say the financial assistance will provide a strong foundation for women to generate employment for themselves, enhancing both their economic and social standing.
