Patna: Bihar is set to remain gripped by harsh winter conditions, with no major respite in sight, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast cold day conditions across parts of the state till December 23, accompanied by dense fog at several locations until December 24.
According to the IMD, the persistent absence of sunlight over the past four days has intensified the chill, while night temperatures are expected to dip further by two to three degrees after the next two days. The weather is likely to remain dry across the state for the next week, offering little relief from the cold.
On Sunday, Gaya recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Bihar at 8.0°C. Across the state, minimum temperatures ranged between 8.0°C and 14.1°C. Over the past 24 hours, minimum temperatures dropped by 3–5°C in several western and central districts, while other regions saw no significant change.
Dense fog has further compounded the situation, with Gaya reporting the lowest visibility at just 50 metres. The IMD noted that there has been no rainfall recorded during this period.
Forecast and warnings
On December 22, cold day conditions are forecast for Gaya, Nalanda, Arwal and Jehanabad districts. Dense fog is likely in parts of north-western Bihar, including Sitamarhi and Sheohar, with light to moderate fog in remaining areas.
By December 23, dense fog is expected at isolated locations in northern and south-western districts, while other parts of the state may experience light to moderate fog.
The IMD said there would be no significant change in maximum temperatures over the next three days and no major variation in minimum temperatures for at least five days, indicating that the cold spell is likely to persist.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during early morning and late-night hours due to reduced visibility and increased cold stress, particularly for the elderly, children and those with health conditions.
