Patna: Bihar is seeing a steady intensification of winter conditions, with temperatures dropping sharply over the past 24 hours and dense fog settling across large parts of the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), minimum temperatures have fallen by 2–4°C and are likely to dip a further 1–3°C over the next two to three days.
The fall in temperature has deepened the cold conditions, with fog particularly thick in the mornings and evenings. On Thursday, dense fog was recorded in at least 10 cities, including Patna, Bettiah and Gopalganj, where residents gathered around bonfires to keep warm. Visibility in Purnia fell to just 500 metres on Thursday morning.

In Patna, the cold has grown more noticeable over the last two days. Light fog is expected through the mornings for the next 48 hours, with temperatures dropping sharply in the early hours and late evenings. The IMD expects minimum temperatures to remain around 12–13°C, while daytime temperatures will range between 26°C and 28°C.
The worsening fog has slowed road traffic in many areas, with early-morning commuters forced to reduce speed and villagers delaying their departures until visibility improves. The IMD forecasts no significant change in fog intensity in the coming days.
Air travel was hit on Wednesday, with 14 flights delayed and one SpiceJet service from Hyderabad cancelled due to poor visibility at Patna airport. Rail services have also been affected: despite the deployment of 14 officials to manage operations in foggy conditions, 52 trains originating or passing through the East Central Railway zone have been cancelled.
According to the Bihar Mausam Seva Kendra, temperatures across most districts—except Kaimur, Sasaram, Buxar, Bhojpur, Arwal, Jehanabad, Patna, Aurangabad, Gaya, Nalanda and Nawada—are expected to fall by an additional 1–2°C within 48 hours.

Light to moderate fog is likely to persist in many parts of West and East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Kishanganj, Aurangabad, Banka, Bhagalpur, Sasaram and Kaimur during morning and late-night hours, potentially affecting travel across these districts.
Westerly winds blowing at up to 30 km/h are compounding the cold, accelerating the drop in minimum temperatures. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain between 24°C and 28°C, with nighttime readings falling to between 10°C and 15°C.
The state is currently experiencing dry conditions, with no rain in the forecast. However, districts where temperatures have already hovered around 10°C are likely to see even more severe cold in the coming days.
