Patna: Winter has tightened its grip on Bihar, turning the cold into a daily ordeal rather than a passing weather event. Minimum temperatures have slipped below 10C in almost all districts, pushing people indoors soon after dusk and leaving streets largely deserted in the evenings.
Kaimur has recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 6.6C, making it Bihar’s coldest district. Meteorologists attribute the sharper chill there to the region’s hilly terrain and forest cover, which consistently intensify night-time cooling.
Fog to blanket large parts of the state
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that moderate to dense fog is likely to persist across 24 districts over the next two days, particularly during the night and early morning hours. The affected belt stretches from West Champaran through Patna to Bhagalpur, raising concerns about severely reduced visibility.
Fog has already disrupted daily routines across the state. In Purnea, visibility dropped to just 250 metres, while several other districts reported similarly poor conditions in the mornings and evenings. Meteorologists say slow north-westerly winds and cloud cover at night are allowing the fog to linger.

Nights colder, days offer limited relief
While daytime temperatures are expected to hover between 24C and 28C, offering brief respite, the IMD said the chill during mornings and evenings is unlikely to ease soon. In districts such as Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Patna, Gaya, Nalanda and Kaimur, minimum temperatures are forecast to remain between 8C and 10C over the next two days. Elsewhere, night temperatures are expected to range between 10C and 14C.
In districts including Purnea, Katihar, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur and Begusarai, night-time temperatures have settled between 10C and 11.5C, while Patna has seen lows close to 10C, prompting quieter evenings across the capital.
Meteorologists have cautioned that the cold is likely to intensify further after December 22, urging residents to take precautions against the prolonged chill and reduced visibility.
