Patna: The Bihar government has announced that cooking coal will be distributed through the Public Distribution System (PDS), offering an alternative fuel option to low-income households amid rising LPG prices and supply concerns.
The decision, taken by the Department of Food and Consumer Protection, Bihar, is aimed at providing relief to families struggling with cooking fuel access under current energy constraints.
Alternative Fuel Amid Energy Concerns
Officials said disruptions in global energy supply, linked to geopolitical tensions in Southwest Asia, have contributed to shortages and price increases in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), affecting vulnerable households.
To address this, the state has introduced cooking coal as a supplementary fuel for beneficiaries covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
Distribution Through Existing PDS Network
The government said coal will be distributed through the same ration shop network used for food grains, ensuring ease of access and continuity.
All PDS outlets across the state will be responsible for distribution, with instructions issued to maintain transparency and regular supply.
Multi-Department Coordination
Several departments have been tasked with implementing the scheme:
- The Transport Department will oversee logistics
- The Bihar State Food Corporation Limited will handle supply and storage
- District administrations will monitor execution
Officials have been directed to ensure that the rollout is prioritised and that there are no delays at any level.
Relief For Low-Income Households
BJP spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said the move would benefit ration card holders, particularly those below the poverty line, who are facing difficulty in affording or accessing LPG.
The scheme is expected to provide an affordable alternative for cooking, especially in rural and low-income urban households.
Focus On Basic Needs
Officials said the primary objective is to ensure that no household is deprived of basic cooking fuel during the ongoing energy challenges.
The government added that the initiative is part of broader efforts to cushion vulnerable populations from the impact of rising fuel costs.
