Patna: The Bihar government has directed the agriculture and disaster management departments to carry out an immediate assessment of crop losses caused by recent storms, heavy rainfall and hailstorms across parts of the state.
The directive was issued after adverse weather conditions damaged standing crops and fruit-bearing trees in several districts, affecting farmers during the ongoing agricultural season.
Government announces relief assessment
Chief minister Samrat Choudhary reviewed the situation with senior officials from the agriculture and disaster management departments on Friday.
In a post on social media platform X, Choudhary said the departments had been instructed to conduct surveys of crop and orchard damage to ensure that affected farmers receive appropriate relief.
He said the government was treating the matter seriously and that compensation would be provided on the basis of survey findings.
Weather department issues red alert
Even as the state government began assessing losses, authorities warned that adverse weather conditions could continue in parts of Bihar.
Based on inputs from the Meteorological Centre, the disaster management department issued a red alert for eight districts — Bhojpur, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Nalanda, Patna, Saran and Siwan.
Officials said these districts could witness thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds of 50 to 60 kmph and moderate to heavy rainfall over the next few hours.
Advisory issued for residents
The administration has advised residents to remain indoors during severe weather conditions and follow official safety instructions.
Officials said district administrations had been asked to remain alert and monitor the situation closely in view of the continuing weather warnings.
