Patna: A citizen awareness workshop on cyber crime and fraud held in Patna highlighted the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in tackling online scams.
The event, organised at Niyojan Bhawan, brought together senior officials who underlined the alarming rise in cyber fraud in India. According to official data, fraud worth about Rs 33,000 crore has been reported so far, coinciding with the rapid growth of mobile, internet and broadband users.
Among the tools showcased was ASTR, an AI and facial recognition-powered system designed for telecom SIM subscriber verification. Officials said ASTR has uncovered thousands of cases where individuals obtained hundreds of SIM cards using manipulated identities, leading to the closure of crores of fake connections.
Another key measure is the Digital Intelligence Portal (DIP), which gathers detailed information on cyber criminals and shares it with security agencies, banks and other institutions. Officials also promoted the AI-based Sanchar Saathi portal and mobile app, which enables users to block suspicious calls, SMS and WhatsApp numbers, track lost phones and view all mobile connections issued under their name.
A recently launched Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) tool was also presented. It alerts users before money is transferred to suspicious UPI or bank accounts and halts high-risk transactions, a move that has proved effective in curbing economic crime.
Officials noted that awareness programmes have also been extended to Bihar Police, industry associations and business chambers. They said collaboration between central agencies and AI-powered systems is proving critical in strengthening India’s cyber security framework.
