Patna: The Government of Bihar has announced that all government hospitals in the state will soon operate through a fully digital system in a major effort to reduce long queues and improve patient services. The reform, led by the Bihar Health Department, will connect registration, health check-ups, doctor consultations and medicine distribution to one unified online platform.
Under the new arrangement, patients will register through POS (Point of Sale) machines installed at hospital counters. Instead of relying only on handwritten records, each patient will receive a printed slip containing details such as a registration number, doctor’s name and consultation room number. Officials say this will reduce errors, prevent loss of documents and make the entry process smoother and quicker for patients.
After registration, patients will move to a vitals counter where blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate will be checked and entered directly into the digital system. They will then visit the assigned doctor for consultation. Doctors will upload prescriptions and treatment details to the online portal, replacing handwritten prescriptions with digital records that can be safely stored and accessed during future visits.
The pharmacy system will also become fully digital. Medicines will be given based on online prescriptions, and every transaction will be recorded in the system. This is expected to improve stock management and ensure transparency in medicine distribution. The digital token display system, already present in some large hospitals, will now be fully activated and linked to the new platform so patients are called in order, reducing crowding and confusion.
Officials believe the reform will not only shorten waiting times but also improve accountability in public hospitals. By keeping patient data secure and making hospital performance easier to monitor, the government hopes to modernise Bihar’s healthcare services and offer more efficient treatment to people across the state.
