Patna: As Durga Puja and Dussehra celebrations draw closer, the Energy Department of the Bihar government has issued detailed instructions to ensure electrical safety at puja pandals and public places. With large gatherings expected across the state, the department has stressed that strict precautions must be followed to avoid accidents such as fire or electric shocks.
The District Magistrate of Patna has directed sub-divisional officers to make sure that organisers of puja pandals comply with these rules under the supervision of electrical engineers. The instructions say that all wiring and decoration work should be done only by authorised contractors using good quality material. Organisers must also obtain valid electrical connections along with inspection reports before starting use.
The guidelines also make it clear that an experienced electrical supervisor or lineman should remain present throughout the puja period to keep watch on the electrical system. Pandals must not be set up close to overhead power lines, transformers or substations. All wires used should be properly insulated, laid with care, and supported at a safe height to avoid the risk of falling or breaking. The use of damaged or cut wires has been strictly prohibited.
Safety equipment has also been made mandatory. Organisers must keep fire extinguishers, sand buckets, rubber mats and a first-aid box near the control room or switchboards. Waterproof covers are required for panels and switches to protect them from rain. Generators, wires and switchboards must be kept inside secured areas with warning signs so that unauthorised persons cannot access them.
The Energy Department has instructed South Bihar Power Distribution officials to allow connections at pandals only after proper checks. It has also asked authorities to spread awareness about electrical and fire safety during the festive season so that both organisers and the public remain alert. Officials said these measures are aimed at ensuring that devotees can celebrate Durga Puja and Dussehra with joy and without fear of accidents.
