Patna: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Bihar government to finalise the transfer of officials across departments by October 6, ahead of the state’s 2025 Assembly elections.
In a letter to Bihar’s Chief Secretary, the Commission emphasised that no transfers should be made to officials’ home districts. Officials completing three years of service by November 30 are also to be relocated, the directive stated.
The move comes ahead of a possible election announcement after October 6, with the Commission stressing that these transfers are intended to ensure a fair and impartial electoral process. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is expected to visit the state following the transfer deadline.
The instruction, issued by Bihar’s Chief Electoral Officer Vinod Singh Gunjanwal, was sent to the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Development Commissioner, all Additional Chief Secretaries, and Principal Secretaries. Copies were also circulated to Divisional Commissioners and District Election Officers to ensure compliance before the Model Code of Conduct comes into force.
