Gopalganj: A violent incident has been reported from the Baikunthpur Assembly constituency in Gopalganj following the first phase of voting in the Bihar Assembly elections on November 6. Three members of a Dalit family were brutally assaulted, allegedly for voting in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
According to police and local sources, the victims — Mukesh Ram (28), his father Chhattu Ram, and his brother Chhotu Ram — were attacked while returning home to Bucheya village after casting their votes at the Sidhawalia polling booth. Mukesh told reporters that a group of villagers stopped them on their way and demanded to know which party they had supported. When the family said they had voted for the BJP, the men reportedly became enraged and attacked them with sticks.
The attackers are alleged to be supporters of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Mukesh named several accused, including Akhilesh Yadav, Vishal Yadav and his father, claiming they targeted his family because they did not vote for the RJD. All three victims sustained serious injuries and were first treated at the Sidhawalia Community Health Centre before being referred to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital.
BJP candidate Mithilesh Tiwari visited the hospital late on Wednesday night and met the injured family. He accused supporters of RJD candidate Premshankar Prasad of orchestrating the assault.
Gopalganj SDPO Rajesh Kumar confirmed the attack and said similar incidents were reported from two other locations — Bangra in Baikunthpur and Devkuli in Mohammadpur. “Written complaints have been received from the injured, and legal action will follow after investigation,” he said.
