Patna: The Bihar government has announced the Bihar Electric Vehicle (Amendment) Policy 2026, which will come into effect from upcoming June 1, as part of efforts to promote electric mobility and reduce vehicular pollution in the state.
The revised policy introduces higher subsidies for women purchasing electric vehicles and expands incentives for electric cargo three-wheelers.
Subsidies for electric cars and two-wheelers
Under the policy, women purchasing electric cars will be eligible for subsidies of up to Rs One lakh. Women buying electric bikes, scooters or scooties will receive financial assistance of up to Rs. 12,000.
The government said the initiative is aimed at encouraging wider participation of women in electric mobility and supporting economic independence.
For male buyers in the general category, subsidies will be limited to electric two-wheelers. Eligible applicants purchasing electric bikes will receive up to Rs. 10,000 in assistance, while no subsidy has been announced for electric car purchases by men.
Incentives for cargo three-wheelers
The revised policy also includes incentives for electric goods carrier three-wheelers.
Women from the general category will be eligible for subsidies of up to Rs. 50,000, while women from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities can receive up to Rs. 60,000.
Officials said the measure is expected to support small businesses and self-employment opportunities.
Tax relief and online application process
To lower the overall cost of electric vehicles, the government has also announced up to 50% relief in motor vehicle tax for all EVs registered in Bihar.
The subsidy application process will be fully digital. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) is developing an online portal through which applicants will be able to apply from June 1.
Officials said the online system is intended to simplify procedures and reduce the need for physical visits to government offices.
Eligibility conditions
Applicants seeking subsidies must be residents of Bihar and purchase vehicles registered within the state.
Mandatory documents will include bank account details, vehicle registration certificate and a mobile number. Applicants from reserved categories will also be required to submit caste certificates.
Government expects higher EV adoption
The state government said the revised policy is expected to increase the adoption of electric vehicles across both urban and rural areas.
Officials said the incentives could help reduce dependence on petrol and diesel while contributing to lower pollution levels and improved environmental sustainability.
