Patna: In a major relief for electricity consumers across Bihar, the state government has announced a complete waiver of compound interest on outstanding electricity bills. Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav confirmed the move during a Calling Attention Motion in the Assembly, stating that customers will now only be required to pay the principal amount.
The announcement comes after several MLAs raised concerns about the growing burden of unpaid electricity dues and escalating interest charges, particularly on economically weaker households. “The government recognises the strain caused by surcharges and is committed to providing relief,” Yadav said.
Under the latest phase of the state’s ‘Samadhaan Yojana 2025-26’, customers can avail a 100 percent surcharge waiver if they settle their outstanding dues in a single payment. Earlier phases had offered discounts ranging from 50 to 100 percent. The new initiative is expected to benefit those with long-standing unpaid bills, easing financial pressure on the poor and middle-class households.
The move follows Bihar’s existing policy of providing free domestic electricity for up to 125 units per month. With the interest waiver, the government aims to reduce the financial burden further while simultaneously recovering long-pending revenue for the electricity department.
Consumers wishing to benefit from the scheme can pay their dues in one lump sum and apply through their district electricity office or via the department’s official website. Vulnerable sections, including BPL and economically weaker households, are expected to be the primary beneficiaries.
The waiver is part of the government’s broader strategy to make electricity more affordable while ensuring timely revenue collection from outstanding bills.
