Patna: Electricity officials in Bihar will face financial penalties if they fail to provide new connections within a fixed timeframe, after the state government introduced a measure aimed at improving service delivery and accountability.
The decision, announced through a post on the official account of the Janata Dal (United), is expected to bring relief to consumers who have long complained of delays and repeated visits to electricity offices to secure connections.

Under the new system, authorities must ensure that electricity connections are provided within three days in core urban areas. If they fail to meet the deadline, the responsible official will be fined Rs 1,000 per day, payable from their own pocket.
The move seeks to address longstanding inefficiencies, with some applicants previously waiting for weeks or even months for connections.
According to the details shared, timelines will vary by region. Consumers in other urban areas and townships can expect connections within seven days, while those in rural areas will receive services within 15 days, accounting for infrastructure constraints.
In its statement, the party said the provision would “ensure accountability among officials” and improve transparency and efficiency in electricity services across the state.
The reform forms part of broader efforts by the government to streamline public services and reduce bureaucratic delays, particularly in essential utilities.
