Patna: Large parts of Bihar are facing a flood crisis as the Ganga river continues to rise above danger levels, severely impacting multiple districts including Bhagalpur, Khagaria, Munger, Katihar, and Lakhisarai. The floodwaters have inundated sections of National Highway 80 in Bhagalpur, disrupting road connectivity and daily life.
Areas along the Ganga, including Bhagalpur, have reported the river flowing well above the danger mark, forcing water onto major highways and low-lying neighborhoods. Authorities indicate that flood waters from the Ganga and other rivers like Kosi have caused many villages in Khagaria, Munger, Katihar, and Lakhisarai to become inaccessible, with residents relocating to safer places as a precaution.
Monsoon rains, significantly heavier than usual in recent weeks, have worsened the situation. The India Meteorological Department has issued alerts for more heavy rainfall in at least 19 northern districts of Bihar, raising concerns about further rises in river levels and new areas being submerged. In response, local administrations have deployed boats for rescue operations, increased monitoring by officials, and set up relief measures for the affected populations.
Tens of thousands of people are already reported to be affected, with homes, farmland, and basic infrastructure under water. The situation in districts like Bhagalpur is especially critical, as several regions are cut off by water, and daily life has come to a standstill. With forecasts indicating more rain in the coming days, the risk of further escalation remains high.
