Patna: Gold and silver prices in Bihar are continuing to climb, pushing traditional jewellery further out of reach for many households. With the festive season underway and the wedding season just around the corner, the surge has left buyers rethinking their purchases.
Jewellers in Patna said customers are increasingly opting for lightweight pieces over heavy ornaments to balance both tradition and rising costs. Experts note that despite the sharp rise in prices, demand for precious metals is unlikely to subside during this period, with many stores now offering discounts and promoting lighter designs to attract buyers.
Market rates
As of Sunday, 24-carat gold was selling at Rs 117,300 per 10 grams in Patna’s jewellery market, rising to Rs 120,819 per 10 grams after GST. The price of 22-carat gold stood at Rs 109,000 per 10 grams, while 18-carat gold was at Rs 90,000 per 10 grams.
Silver too saw steep rates, with one kilogram priced at Rs 146,470, or around Rs 151,000 after GST. Hallmarked silver jewellery was selling at Rs 144 per gram, with old hallmarked silver exchanged at Rs 140 per gram and unhallmarked pieces at Rs 138 per gram.
Old gold jewellery is also fetching high returns, with 22-carat pieces being exchanged at Rs 106,000 per 10 grams and 18-carat at Rs 87,000.
The bigger picture
While consumers are feeling the pinch, jewellers say the seasonal demand will ensure steady sales. “No matter how high prices go, people will still buy gold and silver during weddings and festivals—it’s part of tradition,” one Patna-based jeweller said.
