Patna: For thousands of government job aspirants in Bihar, clearing a competitive examination is only the beginning. Delayed results, pending interviews, court cases, postponed examinations and recruitment disputes are adding to uncertainty over appointments, with students once again taking to the streets in Patna.

At Gardanibagh in Patna, aspirants have been protesting over delays in recruitment examinations, results, appointment processes and controversies surrounding various recruitment drives. The agitation comes amid a broader wave of student protests over government jobs, including a recent movement in neighbouring Jharkhand.

According to available records of the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC), Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC), Central Selection Board of Constable (CSBC) and Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC), around 70,000 government posts are either in the recruitment pipeline or at different stages of the selection process.

One of the protesters, Mahanand Kumar, said the recruitment of librarians had been pending for nearly 18 years.

“The rules were framed and there was talk of conducting the examination, but the recruitment process did not move forward. How long will we remain unemployed? How long will we keep going from one office to another?”

Another aspirant, Priyattam Kumar, alleged irregularities in the 70th BPSC examination and said he was banned by the commission for five years after raising questions about the examination. These allegations could not be independently verified.

The concerns reflect a wider frustration among Bihar’s government job aspirants, many of whom spend years preparing for competitive examinations while recruitment schedules remain uncertain.

70th BPSC controversy continues to fuel protests

The controversy surrounding the 70th BPSC examination remains one of the key issues raised by protesters at Gardanibagh.

Aspirants demanding cancellation of the examination have alleged large-scale irregularities. The allegations have not been officially established.

Priyattam Kumar claimed that candidates were not satisfied with the 70th BPSC result and questioned the commission’s evaluation process. He also referred to an RTI response that, according to him, indicated that a model answer key had not been prepared.

The final result of the 70th BPSC examination was declared on June 20, 2026, while successful candidates were issued appointment letters in the second week of August.

Exams completed, but candidates await the next stage

For many aspirants, clearing the preliminary examination does not immediately lead to recruitment. Results, mains examinations, interviews, document verification and appointment can take additional months.

Several recruitments currently listed in the BPSC calendar have completed one or more examination stages but are yet to reach final appointment.

71st BPSC

The preliminary examination for the 71st BPSC, which has 1,298 posts, was held in September 2025, followed by the mains examination in April 2026. Candidates are now awaiting the mains result and subsequent stages of selection.

Assistant Engineer

The joint Assistant Engineer examination for 1,040 posts was conducted in July 2025. The BPSC calendar records the requirement for directions from the High Court and revised vacancies from the Road Construction Department before the process can move ahead.

Special Teacher

Recruitment for 7,279 Special Teacher posts has already seen an examination, but the result has not been released amid a court case.

AEDO recruitment

The examination for 935 Assistant Education Development Officer (AEDO) posts, scheduled for April 2026, was cancelled. A fresh examination date has not yet been announced.

Assistant Town Planner

The examination for 36 Assistant Town Planner posts was conducted in May 2026.

Several examinations are running behind schedule

Postponement of examinations after dates have been announced is another major concern for aspirants, as it forces them to repeatedly change their preparation schedules.

The 72nd BPSC Combined Competitive Examination, initially scheduled for July 26, 2026, was postponed. According to the revised calendar issued on August 14, its preliminary examination is now scheduled for October 25, 2026.

The examinations for Assistant Revenue and Accounts Officer and Assistant Urban Welfare and Registration Officer, each involving 285 posts, have also been postponed.

The Teacher Recruitment Examination-4 (TRE-4) for 32,388 teaching posts is another major recruitment awaiting examination.

Recruitment disputes reach courts

Several recruitment-related disputes have reached the judiciary.

The 70th BPSC examination has been the subject of protests and demands for cancellation and re-examination, although allegations of large-scale malpractice have not been officially established.

The recruitment process for 1,040 Assistant Engineer posts is before the High Court.

A case concerning the postponement of the 33rd Bihar Judicial Service Preliminary Examination is pending before the Supreme Court.

More than 32,000 teaching posts in TRE-4 pipeline

Despite delays in several recruitments, Bihar also has a substantial number of vacancies moving through different stages.

The TRE-4 recruitment for 32,388 teaching posts is among the largest upcoming recruitment exercises. According to the BPSC calendar, the examination is proposed to be held between September 22 and 27, 2026, with the result potentially being announced in November.

Several BPSC recruitments are also awaiting interview schedules. These include:

  • 1,711 Assistant Professor posts in medical colleges
  • 241 HOD posts in the Science and Technology Department
  • 455 Assistant Professor posts in the Science and Technology Department
  • 169 Professor posts in the Science and Technology Department

The interview dates for these recruitments are listed as TBD, meaning the final schedule has not yet been determined.

Other specialist recruitments also remain at different stages, including 88 Ayurveda College Assistant Professor posts, 15 Tibbi College posts, 13 Homeopathic Assistant Professor posts, 17 Factory Inspector posts and five Boiler Inspector posts.

Police recruitment also adds thousands of posts

Government recruitment in Bihar extends beyond the BPSC.

According to CSBC records, recruitment processes are underway for 993 Constable Operator posts and 83 Special Branch Constable posts in 2026.

For the recruitment of 4,361 Driver Constables, the written examination has been completed and subsequent PET/DET stages have progressed.

The CSBC also released the result of the examination for 19,838 Bihar Police Constable posts on May 27, 2026.

BSSC recruitment awaits examination schedule

The Bihar Staff Selection Commission is another major source of government employment in the state.

The Second Inter-Level Combined Competitive Examination is expected to fill 26,426 posts across various departments. Around 33 lakh candidates reportedly applied for the recruitment.

However, candidates have been waiting for the examination schedule, which has remained pending for around three years.

Student protests spread amid wider recruitment concerns

The renewed protests in Bihar come against the backdrop of growing student dissatisfaction over competitive examinations and government recruitment across several states.

Student protests over recruitment issues have recently intensified in Jharkhand, where a confrontation between protesters and police was reported in Ranchi on August 10.

In Bihar, aspirants at Gardanibagh are now raising similar concerns over examination delays, recruitment schedules, results, court cases and alleged irregularities.

For candidates who spend years preparing for government examinations, the uncertainty extends beyond waiting for a result. Repeated postponements and prolonged recruitment processes can affect their preparation cycles and eligibility based on age, making timely completion of the recruitment process a major concern.
