Patna: The Bihar government has introduced an online system for ration card-related services, allowing residents to apply for new ration cards and access various facilities from their homes through a digital platform.
The initiative, launched by the Department of Food and Consumer Protection, is aimed at improving accessibility and transparency in the public distribution system. Citizens can now use mobile phones or computers to submit applications, update family details, change addresses, and track the status of their requests online.
Officials said the digital process is expected to reduce dependency on physical visits to Block Offices and Supply Department offices, saving both time and money for applicants.
Digital Services Expanded
Under the new system, users can add or remove names of family members, update residential information, and monitor the progress of their applications through the online portal.
Once an application is approved, beneficiaries will also be able to download a digital copy of their ration card directly from the portal. The move is expected to reduce delays and minimise the need for document collection visits to government offices.
The department stated that digitisation of the process would help curb irregularities and ensure faster delivery of benefits to eligible households.
Documents Required for Application
Applicants are required to keep essential documents ready before starting the online process. These include Aadhaar cards, proof of residence, a registered mobile number, passport-sized photographs, and relevant family-related documents.
Since the application process is fully digital, forms can be completed and submitted remotely without assistance from agents or cyber cafés.
Application Through EPDS Bihar Portal
Residents can apply for ration cards through the official EPDS Bihar Portal, which provides instructions and detailed information related to the application process.
The department has advised applicants to upload valid documents and ensure that all information entered during the application process is accurate to avoid delays or rejection.
Expected Impact in Rural and Urban Areas
Officials believe the online facility will particularly benefit residents in rural areas, where access to government offices may be limited or time-consuming.
In Bihar, ration cards serve as a key document for economically weaker families, enabling access to subsidised food grains and various government welfare schemes. The government expects the digital system to directly benefit millions of residents across the state by making services more efficient and transparent.
