Patna: The Bihar government is preparing to expand stone mining across several hilly districts after surveys found substantial reserves, a move officials say could reduce construction costs, speed up infrastructure projects and generate local employment.
According to officials in the state’s mines and geology department, recent surveys conducted in Nawada, Sheikhpura, Aurangabad, Kaimur, Banka and Gaya districts have confirmed the availability of large quantities of stone suitable for construction. The government now plans to move ahead with mining proposals, subject to further surveys and regulatory clearances.
Bihar currently depends heavily on neighbouring states for stone chips used in roads, bridges and buildings. By sourcing raw materials locally, the government hopes to lower transportation costs and make construction projects more efficient.
Officials said the next phase of the plan would be guided by detailed survey reports of the identified hill areas. “The intention is to ensure that mining is planned and regulated from the outset,” a senior department official said, adding that environmental safeguards would be a key consideration.
In Banka district, around 20 acres of hilly land in the Shambhuganj block have already been earmarked. Survey reports estimate that millions of tonnes of stone could be extracted from this area alone. If environmental clearances and other formalities are completed on schedule, mining could begin in the near future.
The government expects the initiative to create employment opportunities for local residents, particularly in mining and allied activities. It is also likely to increase state revenues through royalties and other mining-related fees.
Officials emphasised that mining operations would be carried out in line with environmental norms to minimise ecological damage. “The focus is on balancing development needs with environmental protection,” an official said.
If implemented as planned, the move could mark a shift towards greater self-reliance in construction materials for Bihar, at a time when the state is pushing to accelerate infrastructure development.
