Munger/Patna: School students across Bihar will soon have shorter Saturdays after the state government announced that all schools will operate for only half the day at the end of the week.
Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary said the decision was taken in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and follows a long-standing public demand that was also raised during the recent monsoon session of the Bihar Legislature.
Under the new arrangement, schools will no longer function for a full day on Saturdays. Instead, classes will conclude after the tiffin break, allowing students to leave early.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Government Degree College at Asarganj in Munger district.
Government Cites Public Demand
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said he had directed officials in the Education Department to implement the revised school schedule after receiving repeated requests from the public.
The announcement was greeted with applause from those attending the event.
The state government believes the revised timetable is consistent with the objectives of the National Education Policy, which seeks to improve the overall learning environment in schools.

Degree Colleges Planned Across Bihar
During the programme, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding access to higher education.
He said the government aims to establish a degree college in every block of Bihar.
According to the Chief Minister, 211 government degree colleges have already been established in the state, with the Asarganj institution becoming the 212th.
He also announced that new degree colleges would be opened within existing B.Ed. colleges, further expanding opportunities for higher education.
Expansion Of Model Schools
The Chief Minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing programme to strengthen school infrastructure through Model Schools and Saraswati Vidya Niketans.
He said the initiative initially covered 551 locations and, with the inauguration of 10 additional schools on Tuesday, the total has increased to 561.
According to the government, the expansion is intended to improve access to quality education within local communities, reducing the need for students to travel elsewhere.
Focus On Education And Sports
Samrat Chaudhary said the government was working to ensure that children could access education close to home while also improving opportunities for sports.
He said playgrounds and modern sporting facilities were being developed across the state as part of broader efforts to strengthen educational infrastructure.
Chief Minister Visits Munger
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister visited his home district of Munger, where he arrived by helicopter at Launa in Tarapur and received a guard of honour.
He remotely inaugurated 10 Model Schools, including Saraswati Vidya Niketan, Launa, before interacting with students, visiting classrooms and viewing a science exhibition organised by the schools.
Later, he travelled to Harpur Police Station, where he inaugurated the station’s new building and inspected its facilities, including the Station House Officer’s chamber and lock-up.
The visit concluded at Government Degree College, Asarganj, where the Chief Minister formally inaugurated academic activities, met local residents and reviewed development initiatives in the region.
