Patna: The Bihar cabinet, chaired by chief minister Samrat Chaudhary, has approved a Rs 680 crore redevelopment plan for the Baba Hariharnath Temple in Sonepur, one of the state’s prominent religious sites.
The decision was among 22 agenda items cleared during the cabinet meeting held at the state secretariat in Patna.
Corridor Modelled On Kashi Vishwanath
Officials said the redevelopment will be carried out on the lines of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, with a focus on improving infrastructure and enhancing the experience for devotees.
The project will include wider pathways, upgraded temple surroundings, better crowd management systems and improved access to the river for rituals.
Boost To Tourism And Local Economy
The Hariharnath Temple, located in Sonepur in Saran district, is a major pilgrimage site and hosts the annual Sonepur fair, which draws large numbers of visitors.
Officials said the redevelopment is expected to strengthen tourism, generate employment and stimulate economic activity in the region.

Infrastructure And Maintenance Plan
The project will involve construction, site development and the addition of modern amenities for visitors.
Authorities said maintenance of the infrastructure will be ensured for a period of 10 years, with land acquisition processes also forming part of the plan.
The work is expected to be executed by a firm involved in the redevelopment of the Kashi Vishwanath temple complex.
Cultural And Religious Significance
The temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, holds religious importance in Hindu tradition and is associated with the legend of Gajendra Moksha.
The government said the initiative aims to preserve this heritage while modernising facilities for pilgrims.
The project will be implemented through the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation.
