Patna: Large parts of Bihar are bracing for a spell of intense heat and humidity after the southwest monsoon’s advance stalled in the state, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue heatwave warnings for several districts, including Patna.

According to Patna Meteorological Centre, heatwave conditions are likely to persist between 19 and 22 June, affecting districts across southern, central and parts of northern Bihar. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during the hottest hours of the day.

The warning comes as temperatures continue to rise amid weak monsoon activity, with warm nights expected to offer little relief from the daytime heat.

Yellow Alert Issued For 19 Districts

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions on 20 June across 19 districts, including Patna, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Sheikhpura, Nalanda, Nawada, Gaya, Aurangabad, Arwal, Rohtas, Kaimur, Buxar, Bhojpur, Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, East Champaran and West Champaran.

While much of central and south Bihar is expected to experience scorching conditions, weather officials have forecast thunderstorms and light rainfall in parts of Kosi-Seemanchal and eastern Bihar.

Orange Alert For Patna, Gaya And Other Districts

The heat is expected to intensify on 21 June, with the Meteorological Department issuing an orange alert for several districts, including Patna, Begusarai, Nalanda, Gaya, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Aurangabad, Jehanabad, Arwal, Bhojpur, Rohtas, Kaimur and Buxar.

A yellow alert remains in effect for Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, East Champaran and West Champaran.

Forecasters have warned that temperatures could remain significantly above normal, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Heatwave Conditions To Continue Into 22 June

On 22 June, orange alert conditions are expected to continue in Kaimur, Buxar, Aurangabad, Bhojpur and Arwal.

Heatwave conditions are also likely in Patna, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Begusarai, Jehanabad, Gaya, Nawada, Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, East Champaran and West Champaran.

Meanwhile, some districts may receive thunderstorms and scattered rainfall, although meteorologists do not expect these systems to significantly reduce temperatures in the worst-affected areas.

Health Advisory Issued

The Meteorological Department has warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Children, elderly people, pregnant women and outdoor workers are considered particularly vulnerable.

Officials have advised residents to:

  • Avoid outdoor activities between 12pm and 3pm
  • Drink adequate water and fluids throughout the day
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured cotton clothing
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity during peak heat
  • Limit consumption of caffeinated and carbonated beverages
  • Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, vomiting or high fever occur

Monsoon Progress Remains Stalled

Although the southwest monsoon arrived in Bihar two days ahead of schedule this year, its advance has slowed considerably over the past week.

According to the IMD, the monsoon’s northern limit currently passes through Muzaffarpur and Jamui, but rainfall activity associated with the system remains weak.

As a result, large parts of north-western, western, central and southern Bihar continue to experience oppressive heat and humidity.

Meteorologists said conditions do not appear favourable for significant monsoon advancement over the next three to four days.

If monsoon activity strengthens again, temperatures in south Bihar could ease. Until then, residents are likely to face several more days of uncomfortable and potentially hazardous weather conditions.
