Patna: The Bihar Transport Department has unveiled a comprehensive road safety campaign aimed at reducing the rising toll of road accidents across the state. Unlike previous initiatives that relied primarily on fines and enforcement, the new strategy focuses on awareness, education, and community participation.
Since January, the department has rolled out refresher training programs for drivers, covering traffic signs, lane discipline, the dangers of overspeeding, and the mandatory use of helmets and seatbelts. Mobile awareness vans have been deployed in both urban and rural areas, offering free eye examinations for drivers to help prevent accidents caused by poor vision.
A central feature of the initiative is its focus on young people. In collaboration with Mission Road Safety, the District Transport Officer in Patna has launched programmes in schools and colleges to train students from classes 9 to 12 as road safety ambassadors. Since the campaign’s launch in November 2025, over 10,000 students from 25 institutions have received direct training, with the message reaching around 50,000 more students indirectly. The department plans to extend the programme to 100 institutions by March 31, 2026.
Teachers, school staff, and drivers of school buses are also being trained in safe driving practices. “Children who understand road safety are likely to spread the message to their homes and communities,” a department official said. Public messaging through social media, newspapers, and press campaigns continues to reinforce the importance of wearing ISI-marked helmets, using seatbelts, and adhering to speed limits.
Extra precautions have been introduced in response to the seasonal rise in accidents during cold weather and fog. Authorities have ordered a ban on the operation of e-rickshaws on national and state highways and a complete prohibition on makeshift vehicles.
The campaign also includes incentives for Good Samaritans. Individuals who assist accident victims within the “golden hour” by transporting them to hospital can receive up to Rs 25,000, encouraging citizens to help without fear.
The Transport Department’s message is clear: adherence to road safety rules is not merely a legal requirement, but a life-saving practice. With education, awareness, and community involvement, officials hope to prevent accidents before they happen.
