BodhGaya: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, a state-of-the-art facility that promises to significantly improve access to cancer treatment in the region.
The hospital, built at a cost of Rs 570 crore on the campus of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), has been set up by the Tata Memorial Centre. It is expected to serve as a lifeline for patients across north Bihar, who until now were often forced to travel to Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata for advanced oncology care.
Equipped with 22 outpatient departments, 13 intensive care units, six operation theatres, a high dependency unit, blood bank, radiotherapy and brachytherapy services, the hospital also includes dedicated departments for paediatric and gynaecological cancers.
The facility had been running in a limited capacity for the past three years, but the commissioning of the new building makes it fully operational. Doctors at the hospital said it will now be able to handle a much larger number of patients, offering specialised treatment closer to home for thousands across the region.
The inauguration, which PM Modi conducted virtually from Bodh Gaya while on a state tour, formed part of a package of development projects worth about Rs 13,000 crore. The projects, officials said, are aimed at improving both infrastructure and healthcare access in Bihar.
