Patna: The Bihar Heritage Development Society and IIT Patna signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 1 to advance the scientific study and conservation of the state’s historical and cultural heritage using modern technology.
The initiative will focus on documenting and studying Bihar’s ancient forts, mounds and other heritage sites, with technologies including Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and artificial intelligence.
Technology-Based Archaeological Research
Under the agreement, LiDAR surveys will be conducted at selected heritage sites across Bihar to create detailed data for archaeological and conservation work.
GPR technology will be used to examine ancient forts and mounds for structures and remains beneath the surface. AI will then be used to analyse the data generated through these surveys.
The state government said the initiative is aimed at improving the scientific understanding of archaeological remains and supporting evidence-based conservation.
Proposed Heritage Research Centre
The Department of Art, Culture and Youth Affairs and IIT Patna also plan to establish a dedicated centre in the future.
The proposed centre will focus on research, technical documentation and scientific conservation of Bihar’s historical and cultural heritage sites, according to the department.
The government described the collaboration as an effort to integrate modern technology with archaeological research and heritage conservation in the state.
