Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Patna has issued a high alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential flash floods across Bihar, driven by a deep depression over the West-Central Bay of Bengal. The system is moving towards the Odisha coast and is channeling significant moisture into the state.
In the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 AM on October 2, 2025, the monsoon was already vigorous in Bihar, recording a cumulative rainfall of 19.6 mm—a 206% departure from the normal of 6.4 mm. Several districts, including Begusarai (with a high of 160.4 mm recorded in Barauni), Muzaffarpur, Khagaria, Sitamarhi, and Darbhanga, experienced extremely heavy rainfall, leading to widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas.
A historical weather event is expected over North India during October 4-8. Three systems are likely to interact: a Low-Pressure System (LPS) over the Arabian Sea, a Western Disturbance, and an LPS over East India. Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rain Forecast
The IMD’s analysis indicates that the current atmospheric conditions are highly favorable for a continued intense wet spell over the next four to five days.
- Forecast: The state is expected to experience moderate rainfall across various parts, with heavy rain at isolated locations, and a chance of extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall in one or two places.
- Cause: The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, coupled with an upper air cyclonic circulation over Uttar Pradesh, is providing the necessary energy and moisture influx.
- Associated Risks: Widespread occurrences of thunderstorms and lightning (Vajrapat) are highly likely across most districts.
Potential Impact and Safety Advisory
The continuous downpour poses a serious risk of localized flooding and disruption to daily life. The IMD warns that river water levels may rise suddenly, leading to waterlogging and partial flooding in the low-lying areas of the state. The department has advised the public to exercise extreme caution for lightning and floods.
