Patna: The possibility of Bihar securing its own franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has once again entered public discussion after Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal openly supported the idea on social media.
The issue gained traction after Agarwal stated that Bihar deserved representation in the IPL in the same way that franchises such as Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders represent their respective cities and regions.
Samrat Choudhary Responds
Responding to Agarwal’s remarks, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary said he agreed with the sentiment behind the demand.
In a post on X, he said the Bihar government was working in “mission mode” with a clear vision to support cricket in the state and create opportunities for local talent.
https://t.co/Q5xfXYGwiC

He added that with wider support, including from industry leaders, a positive decision regarding a Bihar cricket team could emerge in the future.
Agarwal Highlights Bihar’s Cricketing Talent
Agarwal, who hails from Bihar and currently resides in the United Kingdom, said the state has consistently produced talented cricketers despite lacking adequate infrastructure and institutional support.
In his post, he referred to Bihar as “Bemisaal Bihar” and argued that the state should build its own sporting identity within the IPL ecosystem.
He also highlighted several cricketers from Bihar who have earned national attention in recent years.
Mention of Ishan Kishan and Emerging Players
Among the players mentioned was Ishan Kishan, the Patna-born wicketkeeper-batter who recorded one of the fastest double centuries in One Day International cricket.
Agarwal also referred to Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Samastipur, who recently entered the IPL at a young age, and fast bowler Saqib Hussain from Gopalganj.
According to Agarwal, the achievements of these players demonstrate that Bihar possesses strong cricketing potential but requires better facilities, coaching systems and structured opportunities.
Call for Infrastructure and Investment
Agarwal said Bihar could eventually develop one of the strongest cricket teams in the country if players were provided with world-class infrastructure, professional training and sustained investment.
He also expressed willingness to support initiatives aimed at strengthening sports development in the state.
Concluding his remarks, he wrote that Bihar was “not merely a state, but an emotion,” and said the time had come for Bihar’s sporting talent to gain national visibility.
Debate Around Bihar’s IPL Prospects
Following the exchange between Agarwal and Samrat Choudhary, discussions around Bihar’s cricket infrastructure and IPL aspirations intensified online.
Cricket supporters and sports observers have argued that the creation of modern stadiums, stronger grassroots programmes and increased corporate participation could improve Bihar’s prospects of securing an IPL franchise in the future.
