Patna: A computer operator employed at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences has been accused of carrying out a life-threatening knife attack on his girlfriend following a dispute over marriage in Patna’s Rajabazar area on Wednesday night.

The incident took place in Machhli Gali under the jurisdiction of Shastri Nagar Police Station. According to police officials, the accused allegedly attacked the woman inside his rented room before fleeing the scene.

The injured woman was rushed to the emergency ward of IGIMS with the help of local residents and police personnel. After receiving treatment, she was discharged on Thursday. Police said her condition is now stable.

One-Year Relationship Under Police Investigation

Police identified the accused as Manish Kumar Yadav, a computer operator posted in the General Surgery Ward at IGIMS. He had been residing in a rented accommodation near Sai Temple in Machhli Gali, Rajabazar.

The 26-year-old woman, originally from Jamui district, is currently staying at a girls’ hostel near Dinkar Golambar on Nala Road in Patna while preparing for SSC examinations.

Investigators said the two had been in a relationship for nearly a year.

Argument Over Marriage Led to Alleged Attack

According to the victim’s statement to police, the accused had repeatedly assured her that he would marry her. However, tensions reportedly increased after she began pressing him to formalise the relationship.

Police said the accused allegedly invited the woman to his rented room around 8 pm on Wednesday on the pretext of resolving the dispute through conversation.

During the meeting, another argument reportedly broke out over marriage. Investigators said the altercation escalated, following which the accused allegedly attacked her with a knife.

Locals Alert Police After Hearing Screams

Residents living nearby rushed to the room after hearing screams. Taking advantage of the commotion, the accused allegedly fled the spot before police arrived.

Officers from Shastri Nagar police station reached the location after receiving information from local residents. The woman was found injured and covered in blood, police said.

Doctors at IGIMS provided first aid and later declared her out of danger.

FIR Registered, Raids Underway

After being discharged from hospital on Thursday, the woman lodged a named FIR against the accused at Shastri Nagar police station.

Police said a case has been registered on the basis of her statement, and raids are being conducted to arrest the accused, who remains absconding.

Officials said further investigation into the incident is underway.
