Patna: Bihar has posted one of its strongest years yet in livestock-based production, surpassing national averages across milk, egg and meat output and securing top rankings in multiple categories. Fresh data from the Union Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairying highlights a year of rapid expansion for the state’s livestock sector.
At a press conference on Wednesday at the Vikas Bhawan Secretariat, Dr N Vijayalakshmi, Additional Chief Secretary of the Animal and Fisheries Resources Department, said Bihar’s performance in 2024–25 reflects “exceptional progress” driven by sustained investment and targeted schemes.
The state now leads the country in the annual growth rate of egg production, posting a 9.99% rise — more than double the national average of 4.44%. Bihar also recorded a 4.24% increase in milk production, securing sixth place nationally, compared with the national growth rate of 3.58%. In meat production, the state registered 4.03% growth, ranking ninth against a national rise of 2.46%.

According to officials, the gains are also visible in per capita availability. Average daily milk availability rose from 277g in 2023–24 to 285g in 2024–25. Annual per capita availability of eggs increased from 27 to 29, while meat availability rose from 3.19kg to 3.27kg.
Dr Vijayalakshmi said the impact of government programmes has been “equally transformative” in fisheries. Bihar, once ninth in national rankings in 2013–14, now stands fourth in fish production. The state has achieved self-sufficiency in the sector, she added, with rising productivity expected to bolster rural incomes and create new opportunities for livestock farmers.
Officials said the upward trend demonstrates the resilience of Bihar’s livestock economy and the effectiveness of schemes aimed at boosting production and improving livelihoods in rural areas.
