Patna: Bihar government has launched the Makhana Development Scheme for the 2026-27 financial year under the National Makhana Board, offering subsidies across the supply chain from cultivation to exports.
The scheme is aimed at increasing farmer incomes by boosting production, processing and marketing of makhana, also known as fox nuts, for which Bihar is India’s largest producer.
Officials said farmers engaged in makhana cultivation would be eligible for assistance of up to Rs.71,600 to adopt modern methods and improve output.
Subsidies for processing units
The government has also announced grants for entrepreneurs seeking to establish processing units in different categories.
Under the scheme, micro processing units can receive up to Rs. five lakh, small units Rs. 19.5 lakh, medium units Rs. 1.5 crore, and large units up to Rs. 3.5 crore. Farm-level product management units will be eligible for support of Rs. two lakh.
Push for branding and exports
To strengthen market access, the state will provide up to Rs. 10 lakh for setting up makhana sales centres.
Businesses participating in national and international exhibitions can receive assistance of up to Rs. 25 lakh, while certification support of up to Rs. 2.5 lakh has been earmarked to encourage exports.
An additional Rs. 25 lakh has been allocated for branding and promotional activities to help establish makhana in global markets.
Focus on jobs and rural incomes
The government said the scheme is intended to develop makhana into an organised industry in Bihar, creating new employment opportunities while ensuring better returns for growers.
Farmers and entrepreneurs interested in applying have been asked to submit applications through the Bihar Krishi App.
With Bihar already dominating India’s makhana production, the scheme is being seen as a significant step towards strengthening rural incomes and expanding the state’s agri-business sector.
