Saharsa: The historic Matsyagandha Lake in Saharsa, is set for a major redevelopment with an investment of nearly Rs 98.65 crore, aimed at turning the site into a national-level tourist destination. The project is scheduled to commence on September 15, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Purnia, during which he is expected to lay the foundation stone.
The redevelopment plans include a 400-metre ghat, a circular glass bridge, parking facilities, and a musical fountain designed to become the focal point for visitors. The lake will also feature an Abhivyakti Sthal, a cultural installation based on episodes from the Mahabharata, alongside a souvenir centre and Shaheed Smriti Sthal. A museum will preserve the historical and cultural heritage of Matsyagandha Lake.
The project was approved under the Central Government’s Special Assistance Scheme last November and has received administrative clearance from the Bihar government. Officials say it will generate employment for locals across sectors such as handicrafts, hospitality, and transport, boosting the regional economy.
Once completed, Matsyagandha Lake is expected to emerge as both a centre of religious significance and a prominent tourist attraction. The glass bridge, the second of its kind in Bihar, promises a unique experience for visitors.
