Patna: Bihar has appointed 161 medal-winning athletes to government posts under its ‘Medal Lao, Naukri Pao’ scheme, with Indian cricketers Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar among those receiving appointments as Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs).
According to the Bihar government, the scheme is intended to provide government employment to athletes who have won medals in recognised national and international competitions, linking appointments to their sporting achievements.
Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar Among DSP Appointees
Fast bowlers Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar, both of whom have represented India in international cricket, have been appointed directly as DSPs under the scheme.
Officials said the appointments recognise their sporting accomplishments and form part of a broader initiative to provide career opportunities for accomplished athletes.
161 Athletes Receive Government Jobs
According to the state government, a total of 161 athletes have secured government employment through the scheme.
Appointments have been made across several departments, with eligible sportspersons taking up posts including:
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)
Sub-Inspector of Police
Panchayati Raj Officer
Other government positions based on eligibility and the scheme’s provisions
Officials said the appointments are aimed at providing long-term employment security while recognising sporting excellence.
Government Says Scheme Supports Sporting Careers
Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh said the state is expanding support for athletes by investing in sports infrastructure, training facilities and participation in national and international competitions.
According to the minister, the government is also strengthening access to modern stadiums, sports hostels, experienced coaches and training equipment, while continuing to provide financial incentives for outstanding performances.
