Purnia: Auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws operating from Purnia district headquarters will soon be identified by different colours according to their assigned routes, as the district administration moves to improve traffic management and strengthen road safety.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee, where District Magistrate Anshul Kumar directed officials to implement the colour-coding system and intensify enforcement of traffic regulations, including mandatory helmet and seat belt use.
Colour-Coded Vehicles to Follow Fixed Routes
According to the district administration, autos and e-rickshaws operating on different routes will be assigned specific colours, allowing passengers and enforcement agencies to identify vehicles designated for each route.
Officials said the measure is intended to make public transport more organised and prevent vehicles from operating outside their authorised routes.
The District Magistrate instructed the District Transport Officer and other concerned departments to ensure that the system is implemented effectively across the city.
Helmet and Seat Belt Checks to Be Intensified
The administration also expressed concern over low compliance with road safety rules.
During the review meeting, officials noted that many two-wheeler riders were not wearing helmets and that several four-wheeler drivers were travelling without fastening seat belts.
The District Magistrate directed enforcement teams to conduct intensive inspections to ensure compliance with helmet, seat belt and vehicle safety regulations, alongside monitoring adherence to the new route system.
Parking Areas and Signage Planned
To support the new traffic management plan, the District Magistrate instructed the Deputy Municipal Commissioner to identify suitable locations for parking areas at designated auto and e-rickshaw stands.
Officials were also asked to install signboards at these locations to help commuters identify authorised boarding points and improve traffic flow.
Officials Asked to Ensure Strict Compliance
The administration directed all deputed personnel to report to their assigned duty points and coordinate closely with the District Transport Officer and the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic).
According to officials, enforcement teams will ensure that colour-coded autos and e-rickshaws operate only on their designated routes as part of broader efforts to make Purnia’s transport system safer and more organised.

The district administration is expected to begin implementing the colour-coding system in phases while continuing enforcement drives against traffic rule violations. Officials said the initiative forms part of Purnia’s wider road safety strategy aimed at improving commuter convenience and reducing traffic-related risks.
