Patna: Bihar Legislative Assembly witnessed chaotic scenes on Thursday as ruling and opposition legislators clashed over the police action during the student protests at Dakbungalow Crossing in Patna a day earlier. Proceedings were repeatedly disrupted by sloganeering and were eventually adjourned till the lunch break without any legislative business being conducted.
Among the scheduled business affected was the presentation of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, which could not be tabled due to the disruption.
Opposition Protests Over Student Demonstrations
As soon as the House assembled, opposition members led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) stood at their seats holding placards and raising slogans against the alleged use of force during Wednesday’s student demonstrations.
Speaker Prem Kumar initially urged members to maintain order and informed them that they would be allowed to raise the matter during Zero Hour. Following the assurance, opposition legislators briefly returned to their seats.

BJP MLA’s Remarks Trigger Fresh Uproar
The situation escalated after BJP MLA Shyambabu Yadav, representing the Pipra constituency, was permitted by the Speaker to address the House.
Yadav alleged that those involved in Wednesday’s protest were “not genuine students” and described them as hooligans. He also claimed that his vehicle, parked near Dakbungalow Crossing during the protest, had been attacked.
His remarks prompted renewed sloganeering from opposition members, while another BJP legislator also rose to speak, further intensifying the disruption.
Heated Exchange Leads to Physical Confrontation
The verbal exchange between Shyambabu Yadav and opposition MLA IP Gupta soon escalated inside the Assembly.
According to proceedings in the House, Yadav moved into the Well of the Assembly and advanced towards Gupta during the argument. Marshals immediately intervened and restrained him before the situation could deteriorate further.
Several legislators from both the ruling alliance and the opposition also moved towards one another, leading to a brief standoff. Other MLAs joined marshals in separating members from both sides and restoring order.
Speaker Adjourns Proceedings
Throughout the disruption, Speaker Prem Kumar repeatedly appealed to members to return to their seats and assured them that all sides would be given an opportunity to present their views.
Despite repeated appeals, the House remained disorderly. With normal proceedings becoming impossible, the Speaker adjourned the Assembly until the lunch break.
The confrontation marked the first major face-off between the ruling and opposition benches during the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
