Bihar News: Consumers in Bihar and across India will see some relief in their household budgets after dairy brands Sudha and Amul announced price cuts on milk and other products, following reforms in the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
On Saturday, the Bihar State Milk Co-operative Federation (COMFED) said Sudha had reduced the prices of milk, yoghurt, cheese, ghee and butter, passing on the benefits of the new tax structure. The cuts, ranging from Rs.1 to Rs.10, come at a time when demand for dairy rises sharply ahead of Navratri, Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhath.
A 50g pack of Sudha table butter will now cost Rs.31 instead of Rs.32, while the 100g pack is down to Rs.55 from Rs.56. Prices for paneer have also been lowered: 100g will sell at Rs.46, 200g at Rs.85 and 500g at Rs.205. Toned milk in a one-litre tetra pack has been reduced from Rs.74 to Rs.73, while DTM milk has dropped from Rs.70 to Rs.68. Special packs of Sudha ghee have also seen cuts of Rs.5 to Rs.10.
Amul, meanwhile, has reduced the prices of 700 products, including butter, cheese, ghee, chocolates, bakery items and frozen snacks. The company said the revised rates will come into effect on September 22 2025, ensuring customers nationwide benefit from the GST changes.
The reforms, agreed at the latest GST Council meeting, simplified the system by cutting the four-tier tax structure of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% to just two slabs: 5% and 18%. Officials say this is already having a direct impact on consumers, with dairy brands among the first to pass on the benefit.
With food inflation placing pressure on household budgets, the timing of the cuts is expected to ease the burden during the festive season. For millions of families, the lower prices on essentials such as milk, butter and ghee are a welcome change – and an example, say analysts, of how policy shifts can deliver immediate relief at the kitchen table.
