Patna, September 1: The Centre has agreed to the establishment of a new campus of the National School of Drama (NSD) in Bihar, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said on Monday.
Choudhary thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat following the Centre’s approval, describing the proposed institution as an important development for Bihar’s theatre and performing arts sector.
Training Opportunities For Young Artists
The Chief Minister said the NSD campus would provide young artists in Bihar with opportunities for professional theatre training, stagecraft, performing arts and advanced research.
He said the proposed campus could reduce the need for aspiring artists to travel outside the state for professional training and help create greater interaction between Bihar’s traditional theatre forms and modern theatre practices.
State To Provide Land And Share Construction Cost
According to the Chief Minister, the Bihar government will provide suitable land for the proposed campus.
The state will also bear 50% of the approved cost of constructing the campus buildings, while taking the necessary steps to support the institution’s establishment, the statement said.
The government said it would provide administrative assistance to facilitate the early establishment of the campus.
Focus On Bihar’s Theatre Tradition
Choudhary said Bihar has a long tradition of theatre and performing arts, referring to figures including Kalidas, Ramvriksha Benipuri and Bhikhari Thakur.
He said the new campus could help strengthen institutional support for the state’s cultural traditions while creating professional opportunities for young artists.
Bihar has also established the Bihar Sangeet Natak Akademi to support the preservation and promotion of performing arts, the Chief Minister said.
Investment In Cultural Infrastructure
The proposed NSD campus would represent an investment in Bihar’s cultural heritage, young talent and the future of modern theatre, according to the government.
Choudhary said cooperation between the Centre and the Bihar government would help strengthen Bihar’s presence on the national theatre map and create new opportunities for the state’s emerging artists.
