Samastipur/Patna : In a major step towards modernising railway operations in Bihar, the signalling system at 21 stations under Samastipur Division will be upgraded with modern Electronic Interlocking (EI) technology. The Railway Ministry has approved Rs 233 crore for the project.
The existing panel interlocking systems at the selected stations will be replaced with computer-based electronic interlocking. The upgraded system is expected to improve the accuracy and reliability of operations involving signals, points and train routes.
Signalling upgrade to support Kavach implementation
The new electronic interlocking system will also play an important role in the implementation of Kavach, India’s indigenous automatic train protection system.
A modern and reliable signalling network is essential for the effective deployment of Kavach. The installation of EI systems at 21 stations is therefore expected to support further work related to the safety system.
Computer-based technology to improve reliability
Unlike traditional panel interlocking, electronic interlocking uses computer-based technology to control signals, points and train routes more precisely.
The upgraded system is also expected to make monitoring and maintenance of signalling equipment more efficient. Technical faults can be identified more quickly, potentially reducing the time required for fault diagnosis and repairs.
This could improve the availability of signalling equipment and enhance the overall reliability of railway operations.
Train operations expected to become more efficient
The modernisation of signalling infrastructure is expected to have a positive impact on train operations as well. Improved control over signals and points can help regulate train movements more accurately while providing greater operational flexibility.
The Rs 233-crore project at 21 stations in Samastipur Division is part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to replace older signalling infrastructure with modern technology and strengthen railway safety and operational reliability amid growing train traffic.
