Patna: Bihar is preparing to launch an online teaching system from August 15, allowing teachers to conduct classes for students through digital platforms, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said on Sunday.

The announcement came during a two-day state-level brainstorming session at Adhiveshan Bhawan in Patna, where around 400 senior Education Department officials discussed technology, teacher management, digital learning and reforms in government schools.

AI To Support Teachers, Not Replace Them

Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari said the department is working on introducing artificial intelligence (AI) into the education system.

Tiwari said AI could support the teaching and learning process but should not be treated as a replacement for teachers. He said using AI as a substitute for teachers could adversely affect the education system.

The workshop is examining how AI and other digital technologies can be used to improve education delivery and administrative efficiency.

Online Classes To Run Until 11 PM

Choudhary said the proposed online system will allow teachers in Bihar to conduct classes for students until 11 pm.

The government intends to use digital platforms to make educational resources and teacher support more accessible to students, particularly those who may not have access to high-quality private coaching or schools.

Computer Education To Be Made Mandatory

The Chief Minister also stressed the need to make computer education mandatory in schools.

He said digital literacy and technical skills have become important components of education and that Bihar needs to ensure students are prepared for a technology-driven economy.

The government is also placing emphasis on English-language learning, with Choudhary saying knowledge of English would remain important for students.

Teacher Attendance And Recruitment Under Focus

Teacher recruitment and attendance were also discussed during the session.

Tiwari said the government is moving ahead with recruitment of around 32,000 teachers under TRE-4. Choudhary, however, said recruitment alone would not improve education unless teachers regularly attend their assigned schools and teach students.

He said the government would focus on monitoring teachers after recruitment and take action where teachers fail to discharge their responsibilities.

Education Department To Prepare Action Plan

The two-day session covers several areas, including the National Education Policy 2020, teacher transfers, smart classrooms, e-Shiksha Kosh, HRMS, IT laboratories, vocational education, internet connectivity, solar energy, health, nutrition and hygiene.

Officials from the state, regional, district and block levels are participating in the discussions.

Tiwari said the objective was to move beyond a routine meeting and develop an action plan for better coordination between different levels of the Education Department.

Government Schools At Centre Of Quality Education Push

Choudhary said improving government schools was essential because they remain the main source of education for children from economically weaker and marginalised families.

He questioned why students from Bihar have to travel to cities such as Kota for education when many of the teachers working there are themselves from Bihar.

The Chief Minister said the focus should be on creating conditions in Bihar where students can access quality education without having to leave the state.

Committee Planned For Examination Reforms

Reforming Bihar’s academic and competitive examination system has also been identified as a priority.

Choudhary said a state-level committee would be constituted to examine reforms at different stages of the examination process.

He also said strict action would be taken against those found involved in examination irregularities, with action under the law extending to imprisonment where applicable.

Government Plans Greater Engagement With Students

The Chief Minister said the government would establish greater communication with young people to understand their concerns and address issues related to education and examinations.

He also called for schools to use Saturdays for activities aimed at the social development and empowerment of students.

Technology At The Centre Of Education Reforms

The brainstorming session is part of the government’s broader effort to examine changes required across Bihar’s education system, from the department level to individual schools.

The proposed online classes, AI-based educational support, mandatory computer education, teacher monitoring and examination reforms are expected to form part of the state’s wider strategy to improve access and quality in government education.
