Patna: Bihar’s electricity demand reached a new high on Monday night as the state recorded a peak power requirement of 8,838 MW, reflecting the growing consumption of electricity across households, businesses and industries.
According to data released by the State Load Despatch Centre, the peak demand was recorded at 8.45pm and exceeded the previous year’s highest demand by 86 MW.
The state’s power utility had recorded a peak demand of 8,752 MW in July last year. More recently, Bihar registered a peak demand of 8,818 MW in May this year.
Rising Temperatures Driving Demand
Officials in the Energy Department expect electricity consumption to rise further in the coming weeks as temperatures continue to climb across the state.
Speaking at an event at Vidyut Bhawan on Sunday, Energy Minister Shailesh Kumar, popularly known as Bulo Mandal, said Bihar’s electricity demand could soon touch the 9,000 MW mark.
He said the state possesses the capacity and infrastructure required to meet the anticipated increase in demand.
The minister also revealed that the department is preparing a long-term strategy for the sector, with an action plan extending over the next three decades.

Focus On Reliable Power Supply
Energy Secretary Ajay Yadav said the department remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted and high-quality electricity supply for consumers.
He noted that Bihar’s power generation company and associated agencies are working continuously to meet the growing demand and maintain system reliability during peak consumption periods.
Yadav expressed confidence that the state would be able to meet future peak demand requirements as well, despite the rapid growth in electricity consumption.
Push For Energy Security
Alongside efforts to strengthen conventional power infrastructure, the state government is also focusing on expanding renewable energy capacity.
Officials said Bihar is moving rapidly towards greater self-reliance in the solar energy sector as part of its broader strategy to enhance energy security and meet future demand sustainably.
The latest demand figures underscore the significant transformation in Bihar’s energy landscape, with rising electrification, urbanisation and economic activity contributing to record levels of power consumption across the state.
