Chhapra: A suspected liquor smuggler was injured in a police encounter in Bihar’s Chhapra district late on Tuesday night, in what officials say is the third such incident in the state in less than two weeks following the formation of the new government.
Police said Ajay Rai, described as a notorious liquor trafficker, was shot in the leg during an exchange of fire with officers near Durga Ghat in the Manjhi police station area. Rai was allegedly attempting to transport a large consignment of illegal alcohol across the river by boat when police moved in after receiving a tip-off. The smugglers are said to have opened fire first, prompting a retaliatory response from officers. Rai was apprehended and taken to Chhapra Sadar Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
A second suspect, identified as Sukesh Kumar, reportedly surrendered after hearing gunshots. Officers recovered two country-made pistols, four live cartridges and two used shells at the scene.
According to police sources, the confrontation began shortly after 1am, when the boat carrying the liquor docked at the ghat. The operation was led by the Manjhi station chief, who had formed a cordon around the area in advance.
An investigation has been launched into the alleged smuggling network, which police believe may involve larger gangs operating along the Bihar–Uttar Pradesh border. Officers are examining the origin of the seized consignment and its intended destination.
Liquor smuggling cases have risen in the Manjhi region in recent months. The police crackdown has intensified since Samrat Chaudhary assumed the role of home minister, with Tuesday’s confrontation marking the third encounter in 12 days.
