Patna: Bihar’s Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar has made it clear that police personnel involved in criminal activities will face strict punishment. Speaking at a press conference at the police headquarters in Patna, he said that there is no place in the police force for officers who misuse their uniform. According to the DGP, any police officer found involved in crime will not only lose their job but will also be sent to jail. He stressed that criminal behaviour by those meant to protect the law would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The warning comes in the wake of recent corruption cases involving police personnel in districts such as Motihari and Chhapra. These cases include allegations against station house officers from Lalganj police station in Vaishali and the Gaya GRP. Responding to questions on these incidents, the DGP said no leniency would be shown. Clear instructions have already been issued to take strict action, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been sent to Lalganj in Vaishali to carry out a detailed investigation.
The DGP also spoke about the police role in land disputes, which often lead to law and order problems. He said that while police involvement in land matters is limited, they must remain alert to prevent violence. All station house officers have been instructed to compulsorily attend meetings held every Saturday at the circle level to discuss land-related issues. Districts have also been directed to identify land mafia and take firm action against them.
Highlighting crime figures, Vinay Kumar said Bihar has seen a decline in serious crimes in 2025 compared to 2024. For the first time, incidents of dacoity in the state have fallen below 200 in a year. While there were 238 cases in 2024, the number dropped to 174 in 2025. Murders decreased by 8.3%, robberies by 21.10%, riots by 21.50% and rapes by 8.20%. Crimes related to banks showed a sharp fall, with bank dacoities down by 80% and bank robberies by 62.50%. He also said that around 50,000 more criminals were arrested in 2025 compared to the previous year.
On cybercrime, the DGP said that although the number of cyber police stations will not be increased at present, more police personnel will be deployed at existing stations. A separate cybercrime control unit has been created, which will be led by an officer of IG or ADG rank. A new six- to seven-storey command and control centre will also be built in Patna to strengthen cybercrime monitoring and response.
The DGP further said that the police are focusing on breaking the networks that supply illegal weapons and ammunition. Recently, more than 20,000 cartridges were recovered, and a case involving over 7,000 cartridges brought from another state has been handed over to the NIA for investigation. In 2025, police uncovered 74 illegal gun-making units across Bihar, seized 4,963 illegal weapons, including 54 regular firearms, and recovered more than 30,000 cartridges, showing intensified action against organised crime.
