Patna: Amid persistent heat and humidity, several parts of Bihar continue to experience thunderstorms and rainfall activity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 19 districts on Friday, warning of rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching up to 50 kmph in some areas during the afternoon.
According to the weather department, pre-monsoon activity remains active over northeast Bihar due to moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal combined with local atmospheric conditions.
Heatwave-like conditions are expected to persist in several parts of south Bihar, including Patna, despite intermittent cloud cover and light rainfall activity in some regions.
Districts under Yellow Alert
The districts under alert include West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Buxar, Bhojpur, Kaimur (Bhabhua), Rohtas, Aurangabad, Gaya, Arwal, Jehanabad, Patna, Nalanda, Nawada, Begusarai, Sheikhpura, and Lakhisarai. Residents in these areas may experience strong sunshine during the day along with high humidity, making conditions uncomfortable.
The IMD has cautioned that temperatures are likely to rise further over the next few days, with maximum temperatures expected to reach between 37°C and 38°C. High moisture levels in the air are also likely to increase the “feels-like” temperature.
Recent Weather Conditions
In the past 24 hours, Kaimur recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 41.1°C, making it the hottest district. Patna continued to experience high humidity, while light cloud cover was observed in Bagaha.
Forecast for Patna (Next 4 Days)
May 15: The weather is expected to remain mostly clear with occasional cloud cover in the afternoon. Rain chances are minimal. Maximum temperature may reach 37°C and minimum 24°C. Hot and dry conditions may lead to heatwave-like discomfort during peak hours.
May 16: Partly cloudy skies with chances of light rain or thunderstorm activity at one or two locations. Strong winds may accompany the weather system. Maximum temperature is expected around 37°C and minimum around 25°C.
May 17: Dry and hot conditions are likely to return with intense sunshine. Maximum temperature may rise up to 38°C, making it the hottest day of the period.
May 18: Partly cloudy conditions may persist, but rainfall chances remain low. Humidity levels are expected to remain high, increasing discomfort levels.
Weather Advisory
The IMD has warned that lightning strikes and gusty winds pose the biggest risk during this period. In recent days, several lightning-related incidents have been reported across Bihar, prompting authorities to urge people to remain cautious.
Farmers, outdoor workers, and those in open areas have been advised to take shelter during adverse weather conditions. The use of mobile phones in open fields during thunderstorms should be avoided, and people are advised to stay away from electric poles and high-risk zones.
Agricultural Advisory
Experts have advised farmers to take precautionary measures to protect crops and harvested produce from damage due to strong winds and rain.
Harvested grains should be stored in safe, covered locations. Horticultural crops such as mangoes and litchis may also be vulnerable to wind damage.
Farmers are also advised to carry out irrigation in the early morning or evening hours to avoid heat stress on crops during peak daytime temperatures.
