Samastipur: The Health Department in Samastipur has gone into alert mode over the possible outbreak of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), commonly known as Chamki Fever, ahead of the peak season associated with the disease.
Officials said that 10 beds have been reserved at the Sadar Hospital for patients suffering from AES. Stocks of all essential medicines have also been arranged to tackle any emergency situation. Although no AES case has been reported in the district so far, the administration has completed precautionary preparations across all blocks.
Sadar Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr Girish Kumar said that AES cases generally rise during the transition period between the peak summer season and the arrival of monsoon, prompting the department to strengthen preparedness in advance.
He said adequate quantities of medicines are available at the hospital and duty rosters for doctors and nurses are being prepared to ensure immediate response in case of any suspected case.
Mock Drill Conducted at Hospital
A few days ago, District Magistrate Roshan Kushwaha inspected the Sadar Hospital and reviewed preparedness related to Chamki Fever. Following the inspection, the Civil Surgeon organised a mock drill at the hospital to assess emergency response mechanisms and rehearse the management of potential AES patients.
Symptoms of Chamki Fever
Dr Girish Kumar said the early symptoms of AES include high fever, body stiffness, persistent lethargy, vomiting, unconsciousness, and seizures. In several cases, children may suddenly lose consciousness.
He advised parents and guardians to immediately take children to the nearest hospital if such symptoms appear, warning that delays in treatment can prove fatal.
