Patna: Bihar is preparing to enter India’s strategic minerals sector after the discovery of rare earth and critical mineral deposits that could support defence manufacturing, electric vehicles, renewable energy and space technology.
State officials say mining is expected to begin soon in coordination with the Centre, with the project projected to generate around Rs 3,000 crore for the Bihar government through signature bonuses, royalties and contributions to the District Mineral Foundation Fund.
If developed as planned, the discoveries could place Bihar among India’s emerging centres for critical minerals at a time when countries worldwide are seeking to reduce dependence on imported rare earth supplies.
Why Rare Earth Minerals Matter
Rare earth elements are indispensable to modern technology despite their relatively unfamiliar name.
They are used in a wide range of strategic applications, including missile guidance systems, radar equipment, fighter aircraft, submarines, drones, satellites and nuclear energy. The same minerals also power everyday consumer products such as televisions, smartphones, digital cameras and advanced electronics.
Officials believe that securing domestic supplies of these minerals would strengthen India’s technological and strategic capabilities while reducing reliance on overseas sources.
China currently accounts for around 70% of global rare earth mining, making domestic production increasingly significant for India’s long-term industrial and national security objectives.
Seven Districts Hold Strategic Mineral Deposits
According to the Bihar government, economically significant mineral deposits have been identified across seven districts.
The discoveries include:
- Gaya: Nickel, chromium, palladium and platinum-group elements.
- Rohtas: Glauconite and pyrite.
- Banka: Copper, lead, cobalt and aluminium.
- Bhagalpur: Lanthanum, cerium, titanium and chromite.
- Nawada: Vanadium and ilmenite.
- Jamui and Jehanabad: Magnetite and iron ore.
Officials say 14 mineral blocks have so far been identified for future mining activities.
A Boost For Defence And Clean Energy
Many of the newly identified minerals have applications that extend well beyond conventional mining.
Lanthanum and cerium are used in nuclear energy systems, missile guidance technologies and advanced defence sensors, including night-vision equipment.
Nickel and cobalt are essential components of lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
Several of the identified minerals are also required for manufacturing high-temperature alloys used in aircraft engines, drones and supersonic technologies.
The discoveries are therefore expected to support India’s ambitions in defence manufacturing, clean energy and advanced engineering.
Economic Impact Beyond Mining
The Bihar government estimates that mining operations could create more than 40,000 direct jobs, ranging from skilled engineers and geologists to technicians, healthcare workers and labourers.
Officials also expect the availability of locally sourced minerals to benefit nearly 300 industries operating in Bihar.
Many manufacturers currently depend on raw materials transported from other states. Local availability could lower transportation costs, reduce input prices and improve competitiveness for industries producing batteries, iron-based products and engineering components.
The government also sees opportunities to attract mineral processing facilities and defence manufacturing units to the state, creating additional employment and investment.
Mining To Begin In Coordination With The Centre
State Mines and Geology Minister Dr Pramod said preparations are underway to begin mining operations.
“Large reserves of rare minerals have been discovered in Bihar. So far, 14 blocks have been identified. Mining operations will commence soon in coordination with the Centre,” he said.
While timelines for commercial extraction are yet to be announced, officials believe the discoveries could mark a significant turning point for Bihar’s industrial economy.
If the proposed mining and downstream industries materialise, Bihar may not only strengthen its own manufacturing base but also play a larger role in India’s efforts to secure critical minerals for defence, digital infrastructure and the transition to cleaner technologies.
