Patna: Bihar recorded its highest-ever peak electricity demand at 9,068 MW on the night of June 24 at 10:56 PM, according to data from the state energy department. The demand was met without disruption across all regions of the state.
Officials said the latest figure reflects a nearly 13-fold rise compared to 2005, underlining the rapid expansion in consumption over the past two decades. In 2015, the peak demand stood at 2,831 MW.
Steady Rise in Power Consumption
The energy department noted that the consistent rise in demand is linked to industrial activity, urban expansion, and improved household access to electricity.
Despite the record load, the state maintained uninterrupted and reliable power supply, which officials attributed to ongoing improvements in generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure.
Government’s Long-Term Planning
Energy Minister Shailesh Kumar, also known as Bulo Mandal, said the rising demand reflects Bihar’s economic progress and improved living standards.
He said the department is preparing for future requirements and is working on power generation strategies aligned with projected needs for the next 30 years.
Focus on Infrastructure Strengthening
The minister added that the ability to meet record demand without disruption demonstrates the efficiency of the system and the commitment of the power sector workforce.
He further stated that the energy department is continuously working to strengthen the state’s power infrastructure to ensure sustained and reliable supply in the coming years.
