Muzaffarpur: The development of Muzaffarpur Airport has moved into an execution phase, with construction work for its first modernisation stage scheduled to begin on July 2, 2026.
The project is part of a broader push to upgrade air connectivity in North Bihar through phased infrastructure development under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model.
Project Overview
The first phase of development is estimated at Rs 43.13 crore, of which Rs 23.47 crore has been allocated for core infrastructure. This includes a passenger terminal building, Air Traffic Control (ATC) facility, and a fire station.
Officials associated with the project said the aim is to develop basic operational capacity to enable future commercial flight services from the airport.
Contract Awarded and Work Timeline
According to official details, the tendering process for the first phase has been completed and the work order was issued on June 22, 2026.
Kanpur-based MHPL Private Limited has been awarded the contract for construction. The company will be responsible for building the terminal, ATC tower, fire station and allied infrastructure.
The construction agency has been given an 11-month deadline to complete the work.
Infrastructure and Operational Facilities
The planned terminal building will be designed to handle passenger movement for future flight operations. The ATC tower will support safe aircraft navigation and air traffic management.
A dedicated fire station will also be constructed in line with aviation safety requirements, along with supporting facilities necessary for airport operations.
Runway Modernisation Plan
A key feature of the airport is its existing brick-paved runway, originally built during the British era.
Instead of complete replacement, authorities plan to strengthen and upgrade the runway under expert supervision to make it suitable for modern aircraft operations.
Tenders for runway strengthening are expected to be issued in the coming weeks, according to project updates.
Regional Connectivity Impact
Once operational, the airport is expected to serve multiple districts including Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, East and West Champaran, Vaishali and Samastipur.
Officials say improved connectivity could reduce dependence on Patna and Darbhanga airports for air travel from the region.
The project is also expected to support economic activity, particularly in agriculture-linked trade such as litchi, vegetables and other perishable goods.
Completion Timeline
Authorities have directed the construction agency to complete the first phase within 11 months. If timelines are met, the basic infrastructure could be ready by next year, paving the way for further aviation development in North Bihar.
