Patna: The Transport Department of Bihar has begun a major road safety training programme to promote responsible driving among government vehicle drivers across the state. The first phase of the initiative was organised on Monday in the auditorium of Visvesvaraya Bhavan, where 450 drivers from various districts and departments attended two sessions. The programme focused on improving knowledge and discipline in driving, covering traffic rules, safety instructions and responsible behaviour on the roads.
The training was conducted by the Institute of Driving Training Research, Bihar, where experts taught drivers through practical examples, presentations and awareness videos. Participants learned about important traffic sign systems, lane discipline, speed limits, zebra crossings, safe overtaking, and emergency handling techniques. The instructors also highlighted the mandatory use of safety equipment, especially seat belts and helmets, to prevent serious injuries in case of accidents.
State Transport Commissioner Ashutosh Dwivedi said that the training programme is being conducted in phases as per the directions issued by the Development Commissioner of Bihar. He stated that all government vehicle drivers will gradually undergo this training so they remain up-to-date with road safety laws and government regulations. According to him, the aim is not only to make drivers technically skilled but also behaviour-conscious so they contribute to safe roads and disciplined traffic movement. He added that traffic violators are also being provided similar training to improve their driving behaviour.
Dwivedi further explained that the government places top priority on reducing road accidents and believes that regular training is one of the strongest tools to achieve this goal. He also highlighted the special focus on women drivers, stating that priority is being given to female drivers and conductors under the Pink Bus service to support women’s employment and ensure safe and responsive transport services.
The training was conducted by Joint Director Jagannath Yadav and instructor Gaurav Abhishek from the Institute of Driving Training Research. The session also saw the presence of Deputy Secretary of the Transport Department, Aruna Kumari, along with the road safety team. Drivers expressed that the programme helped them gain confidence and awareness about safe driving, promising to apply the learning in daily operations.
More training sessions are scheduled in the coming phases to include all government vehicle drivers in Bihar. With this statewide campaign, the Transport Department hopes to create a disciplined road culture, minimise accidents and set an example of responsible driving across the state.
