Patna: Schools across Bihar have been directed to suspend outdoor sports activities and introduce a “water bell” system as part of new safety measures to protect children from the ongoing heatwave.
The guidelines, issued by the Bihar Education Project Council, come amid rising temperatures exceeding 40°C in several districts, including the state capital, Patna.
Sports Suspended, Outdoor Exposure Curbed
Authorities have barred students from playing in open grounds during peak sunlight hours, with sports periods temporarily suspended across schools.
Schools have also been instructed not to conduct classes in open spaces such as under trees, where exposure to heat remains high.
‘Water Bell’ To Prevent Dehydration
A key feature of the new measures is the introduction of a “water bell”, which will be rung at regular intervals to remind students to drink water and stay hydrated.
Officials said the step is aimed at reducing the risk of dehydration and heatstroke among children.
Focus On Basic Facilities
Schools have been directed to ensure the availability of adequate drinking water, including the use of earthen pots, and to keep all classroom fans operational.
District officials have also been asked to ensure that handpumps on school premises are functional, with immediate repairs or new installations where required.
Awareness On Heatstroke
Institutions have been told to educate students on heatstroke prevention through posters and awareness campaigns, advising measures such as wearing light clothing, staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to heat.
Timings Revised In Several Districts
In response to the heatwave, school timings for younger children have already been revised in districts including Patna, Chhapra, Sheikhpura, Gaya and Bhojpur.
In many areas, classes up to grade 5 are being conducted only until late morning, with restrictions on holding classes after 11:30 AM or 12:30 PM depending on local conditions.
Strict Implementation Ordered
Naveen Kumar, state project director, has directed district education officials to ensure immediate and strict implementation of the guidelines.
With heatwave conditions expected to persist, authorities said further measures may be introduced to safeguard students if temperatures continue to rise.
