Patna: Bihar is set to face a sharp drop in temperatures as a cold wave sweeps across the state, prompting authorities to issue precautionary guidelines to minimise its impact.
Residents have already begun feeling the chill in the mornings and evenings, with night temperatures in many areas hovering around 11–12°C over the past few days. The state’s Disaster Management Department has warned that conditions are expected to worsen in the coming days, with temperatures potentially falling below 10°C in late November and early December.
Dr Chandrashekhar Singh, Secretary of the Disaster Management Department, has directed all district magistrates to take immediate measures to protect vulnerable populations. Authorities have been urged to ensure relief and rescue operations are ready, including the provision of medicines and adjustments to doctors’ duty schedules to handle cold wave-related illnesses.
Guidelines also stress the importance of night shelters and temporary accommodations equipped with blankets and other essential amenities. The distribution of blankets and the setting up of bonfires for economically disadvantaged communities have been highlighted as key measures. Authorities are also instructed to maintain a continuous power supply to support indoor heating and healthcare services.
In addition to dropping temperatures, the Meteorological Department has noted an increase in humidity, which could exacerbate pollution levels. Residents are advised to take precautions against cold-related health issues and travel safely during foggy conditions, with strict enforcement of traffic regulations.
